University of Rochester School of Nursing

Size:  15 cubic feet

In 1925 the School of Nursing was established concurrently with Strong Memorial Hospital and the School of Medicine and Dentistry.  The School of Nursing offered a five-year program leading to a Bachelors of Science degree with a major in nursing.  Three years of liberal arts generally preceded a 24 month diploma program.  Subsequently, the latter was extended to 36 months.  In 1934 public health experience at the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) or the Monroe County Health Department was added to the course requirements.  Psychiatric nursing training was added  in 1946.  In 1951, a program leading to a Master of Science degree in nursing education became available.  In 1960, the three-year diploma program component of the baccalaureate program admitted its last class; the generic baccalaureate program remained as the single program for entry into practice.  In 1961, all nursing education was consolidated in the Department of Nursing in the School of Medicine and Dentistry.  In 1998 the decision was made to phase out the generic baccalaureate program.  Today, the School of Nursing offers the Bachelor of Science degree for graduates of diploma and associate degree programs, the Master’s degree in numerous specialty areas, the Doctorate in Philosophy degree and post doctoral fellowships.
