Laura L. Simms - 2009

Laura L. Simms, EdD, RN was a towering leader whose passion for and dedication to excellence in nursing were boundless. She earned a BA from Texas Woman's University; as a Cadet Corps student, a diploma in nursing from Parkland Hospital SON; a MEd from Southern Methodist University; and EdD from Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Simms chaired the 1969 NYSNA Special Committee to Study the Nurse Practice Act whose work resulted in the 1972 landmark revised legal definition of professional nursing practice. The definition was incorporated into the ANA's The Social Contract. She pioneered the role of the Clinical Nursing Specialist while serving as Director of Surgical Nursing at NY-Cornell University MC and Professor of Surgical Nursing, Cornell University-NY Hospital SON. She was a member of the NLN; President and Director-at-Large of NYSNA; an Incorporator, first President, and later a Trustee-at-large of the FNYSN. Among her numerous honors and awards are Honorary Recognition, NYSNA; The Driscoll Award. FNYSN's highest award; and the R. Louise McManus Medal, TCNEAA.
