Lucille Elizabeth Notter - 2008
Lucille Elizabeth Notter, EdD, RN was a visionary nursing educator, author and researcher committed to developing research methods and systems for professional nursing. A graduate of Saints Mary and Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing, Louisville, KY, she earned a BS, MA, and EdD from Teachers College, Columbia University. She held positions at Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago, before moving to practice in the Visiting Nurse Services of New York and Brooklyn. Dr. Notter was the first full-time editor of Nursing Research. She pioneered the International Nursing Index, serving as editor from 1965-1973. She co-authored Essentials of Nursing Research and Professional Nursing: Foundations, Perspectives, and Relationships with Eugenia K. Spalding. A member of NYSNA, NLN, and the Southern NYLN, she was a nurse advisor to NYS Education Department and NYC Committee on Prison Health Services. Known for gentleness, grace and strength, Dr. Notter was Secretary and President of NYSNA; President of NYSNA District #13; President and Treasurer of Nurses House. She received the Distinguished Service to Public Health Nursing Award from the American Public Health Association, the R. Louise McManus Award from Teachers College Nursing Education Alumni Association, Honorary Recognition from NYSNA and was inducted into the ANA Hall of Fame in 1996.
