Effort to Retain SUNY New Paltz Nursing Program

Date: Jun 1, 2009

Eleanor Richards, PhD, RN, Chair of the Nursing Education Program continues to provide vigorous leadership in persuading the SUNY New Paltz President to reverse his decision to close the nursing program.  In letters and statements calling for retention of the program, Dr. Richards notes:

  • The SUNY New Paltz nursing programs re the only ones in the entire state to be terminated, and to the best of my knowledge in the country;
  • No other SUNY New Paltz program is being terminated;
  • This 28 year old highly respected, fully accredited, affordable and accessible nursing program goes to the heart of public service for 8 Hudson Valley counties from the New York City border north to Plattsburgh, west to Sullivan County and east to Connecticut;
  • Retaining the programs is supported by faculty and students in other SUNY New Paltz programs and departments, the New Paltz Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the New York State Nurses Association, the New York Organization of Nurse Executives, the New York State Council of Deans and Directors of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Nursing Programs, the Foundation of New York State Nurses, United University Professions, Chief Medical Officers and Vice Presidents of Nursing Services, the Director of Dutchess County Public Nursing, Republican and Democratic Hudson Valley legislators and numerous other groups and organizations.
