Distinguished Nurse Researcher

Each year the Foundation Board of Trustees honors an outstanding member of the New York Nursing Research Community by conferring the Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award. The first award was presented to Judith A. Sullivan, EdD, RN in 1980, followed by many outstanding nursing research leaders (see below). Criteria for the award include:

  • Evidence of a coherent research program;
  • Evidence of leadership in nursing research;
  • Quality of research;
  • Contribution to the science and art of nursing and health care; and
  • Dissemination of research to the scientific and clinical communities.

Awardees are honored at a recognition event (often a dinner) which friends, family, and colleagues attend. The occasion is marked by recounting the many contributions of the awardee to nursing research and a presentation of the Distinguished Nurse Researcher award. If possible, the prior year’s Distinguished Nurse Researcher recipient also attends and provides an educational session based on her/his research findings.

The Foundation Board of Trustees invites nominations, including self-nominations, for the Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award. In general nominations are accepted from January through May each year. (Note: current members of the Foundation of New York State Nurses Center for Nursing Research Planning Committee and the NYSNA Nursing Research Fellowship are ineligible to be nominated or to participate in the nomination process.)
