History

The Foundation of New York State Nurses has had a long-standing commitment to the recognition and advancement of nursing research as a sustaining component of the nursing profession. In 1980 the Board established the annual Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award as a means to honor outstanding nurse researchers in New York State and publicize the importance of their work. Judith A. Sullivan, EdD, RN has the privilege of being the initial recipient of the award, and she has been followed by some of the nation’s leaders in nursing research.

Center for Nursing Research Established

In 1988, the Foundation Board of Trustees established the Center for Nursing Research as one of its three core operational Centers. The Center for Nursing Research is dedicated to improving nursing practice through nursing research. Specifically, the Center:

Center for Nursing Research Endowed!

In 2006 the Center for Nursing Research was the third operational Center to receive a one million dollar endowment! Through a strong grass-roots effort, nurses located in the Central New York Counties region committed to raising one million dollars to support state-wide nursing research efforts. In recognition of the endowment, the Center for Nursing Research was renamed to the Central New York Nurses Center for Nursing Research.

The Central New York Nurses Center for Nursing Research partners with the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) to advance nursing research. In the past NYSNA supported a Council on Nursing Research which was instrumental in developing a Statewide Nursing Research Agenda and many other initiatives. However, it was decided that duplication of effort would be a disadvantage so NYSNA agreed to transfer the work of their Council on Nursing Research to this Center and a Planning Committee was established. Membership on the Planning Committee is blended: five members are supported by NYSNA and seven members are supported by the Foundation. The work of the Planning Committee is supported by the Foundation’s Director of the Central New York Nurses Center for Nursing Research and a Research Specialist supported by NYSNA. This partnership is reviewed periodically to ensure it is meeting the needs of both organizations and the nursing research community in New York.
